Many people have breakouts after eating certain types of foods. However, there is no unanimity regarding this fact, as cheese may cause acne in one person, but chocolate may lead to breakouts in another. Let's take a look at some of the particular food items that are known to cause acne

  • Refined Carbohydrates

    Snack mixes, cookies, cakes, crackers, muffins, white bread have a higher glycemic index number than other foods. All of these food items are highly processed and include high sugar as well. As a result, they cause a spike in your blood sugar, which causes your insulin levels to rise and result in a breakout.
  • Saturated Fat

    Burgers, potato chips and fries, and fast food meals are your biggest foes if you want to get rid of acne. Studies show that people who have moderate to severe acne consume more saturated fat than those who have mild to no acne. Sat fat increases certain growth factors that contribute to breakouts.
  • Chocolate

    There's been a lot of debate on whether chocolate is responsible for acne or not. Despite inconclusive evidence, it is still found that individuals who overindulge in sugary foods tend to have more breakouts that those who eat a diet that is high in fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Spicy Food

    There's no conclusive evidence about this as well, but many people relate worsening of acne to spicy food.
  • Spinach

    An overdose of spinach leads to acne as it contains iodine. If consumed in moderation, it is great for improving your skin as it contains a lot of iron.
  • Bacon

    Greasy foods like bacon are one of the main causes of oily skin and acne breakouts. It is best to limit the consumption of bacon per day.
  • Caffeine

    To maintain an acne-free skin, too much coffee should be avoided. Beverages like soft drinks, wine, and beer should also be avoided, as they're all stimulants. These beverages can increase cortisol levels, which leads to breakouts. Smoking also should be avoided, for an acne free skin.
  • Canned foods

    Canned foods contain a lot of preservatives and chemicals. Overall, they are unhealthy for the skin. Instead, choose fresh vegetables and fruits, wherever possible to avoid acne.
  • Pancakes

    Pancakes are breakfast favourites and indeed delicious. But these have sweet syrup and are harmful to the skin, so refrain from them, the next time you see 'em.
  • Shrimp

    The peel of shrimp is said to trigger acne conditions. It also contains allergens and high levels of iodine, which can cause acne and skin rashes, as well.
  • Sweets

    Ah, sweets! Who doesn't like a sugary treat or dessert after a meal? Sadly, foods that contain high levels of sugar can cause weight gain, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases as well as make your skin tarnish and lead to acne. Thus, restrict your intake of sugary foods like cakes, candy, cookies, soda and soft drinks. If you have a sweet tooth, then switch to healthier options like fruits or honey.
  • Alcohol

    Alcohol is one of the top foods that lead to acne. Overconsumption will give you a breakout, along with a bad hangover. Alcohol dehydrates the skin and removes moisture from the skin, leading to serious breakouts.

Foods to avoid acne

A balanced and vitamin rich diet can play a major role in acne prevention. Fish is a great source of important fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, which help reduce inflammation in our bodies. Inflammation can activate cells to block pores and cause acne. Broccoli is also packed with vitamin A, B, C, E and K to help fight skin damage. Avocado is also a rich source of vitamin E and C, which help reduce skin inflammation. Also, drink lots of water. Water flushes out the toxins from our body and helps keep our skin clear, so keep drinking throughout the day. Consume fresh fruit juices to get natural glow.
